Did you know that 21 Jump Street was heading to the big screen? If you didn’t — surprise! The film adaptation of the popular 80s TV show has been in development for over a year with comedian Jonah Hill as the headliner. That’s right, THE Jonah Hill will be running the show. You shouldn’t be too worried because he’ll get plenty of help from several other actors including the one who started it all.
Multiple Oscar nominee and blockbuster king Johnny Depp got his big break in Hollywood when he originally appeared on 21 Jump Street as a fresh faced twenty-something. He played Tom Hanson, a baby-faced undercover cop. Depp may not be as young as he used to be but that won’t stop him from revisiting his roots for the movie.
After months of speculation and “will he or won’t he,” it’s been confirmed that Johnny Depp will make an appearance in the new 21 Jump Street. More than likely it will be a cameo that will throw a little nod to the TV show. When it was first announced that a film adaptation would be made, Depp joked that he wouldn’t mind reprising his role as Hanson.
In the past, Depp spoke to EW about how he thought Hanson’s return to 21 Jump Street should be handled. He explained, “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.” That wouldn’t be a vision of Hanson we want to see. He’s much too cute and cool for that.
Besides Jonah Hill and Depp, 21 Jump Street will co-star Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Dave Franco (yes, James Franco’s little brother), and Ice Cube as their captain. This is an interesting cast to say the least. What do you think of Depp returning to 21 Jump Street? Are you excited?
