Richard Armitage is a stage, television and big screen actor. He is mostly known for playing romantic heroes in popular period dramas, such as ‘Mr. Thornton’ in the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel of the same name, ‘North and South’, ‘Guy of Gisborne’ in ‘Robin Hood’, another BBC adaptation of the classic story in which he plays a bad guy and ‘Harry Kennedy’ in ‘The Vicar Of Dibley’.
He has also had action roles, for example, ‘John Porter’ in ‘Strike Back’ and ‘MI-5/Spooks’ agent ‘Lucas North’ in the long running spy series.
Richard Armitage was born and raised in Leicester, England and studied drama at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. He had several minor roles in the 90s and early 2000s, but finally got his big break on television when he landed the role of the proud and haughty Mr. Thornton in North and South. This role propelled him into the stratosphere, as far as his followers were concerned.
Armitage is known for his exceptional work ethics and is admired and respected equally among his fans and peers. He usually immerses himself in his roles and puts forth one hundred percent, in his research of his characters and the lengths to which he goes in portraying them.
Big excitement is currently surrounding him as he is slated to play the epic role of the leader of the dwarves Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, ‘The Hobbit’. The first part, ‘An Unexpected Journey’ opens in the US on Deccember 14. There is great anticipation for this movie on the part of fans, who believe this will help propel Armitage’s career even further.
One of Armitage’s trade marks are his clear blue eyes and dark, tall, handsome looks. He has adoring fans that call themselves ‘The Armitage Army’ and are fiercely loyal to him. He has been known to reply to birthday wishes via one of his fan sites, this is something he has done every year, recently. He also has a deep, unmistakable, baritone voice and plays cello, guitar and flute. He started his acting career in musical theater and is able to showcase his talent in at least one scene in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in which he sings with the dwarves.

After The Hobbit, he has the lead in ‘Black Sky’, a movie about the events surrounding a devastating tornado, in which he has the male lead. Currently in post production and set to open in 2013.
