Behind every great man is a great woman. Such is the case for Terre Blair (photos below), the long-time partner and sturdy rock who took her place as Marvin Hamlisch’s wife for the last 24 years of his life. He is the creative genius who passed away at the age of 68, leaving an indelible imprint on the history of music and show business. His past relationships included Carole Bayer Sager, who sung several of his compositions, and a beautiful actress named Emma Samms.
You all know about his brilliance already. The fabled American musical composer won the grand slam of the entertainment world, with multiple Oscars, Grammy awards, Emmys, and even a Tony award for A Chorus Line, one of the most famous musicals in the history of Broadway shows. That effort won him a Pulitzer Prize as well in 1975, solidifying his place among the true greats of our time. He is only one of two people to win all five awards, the other being Richard Rodgers of Rogers and Hammerstein fame. But you know about his fame already and so do we. What we don’t know is much about the women who loved him, including his former girlfriends and long-time wife.
Marvin had long-term early relationships, including dating the beautiful and talented singer, Carole Bayer Sager, who is now 65 years old. He even wrote a musical based on their relationship called They’re Playing Our Song. How many women can say that about their man? He subsequently reportedly had a relationship in the 1980s with the young actress at the time, the ample-chested Emma Samms (picture in gallery) who is now aged 51. But the lucky woman who eventually won his hand in marriage was Terre Blair.
Biography: Terre Blair was originally from Columbus, Ohio. She was not a typical mid-western girl as she had an ambitious career of her own when the couple met. At the time she was a popular news broadcast anchorwoman for the local ABC affiliate in Columbus at a time when women were just making inroads into the anchor chairs around the country. You can see a vintage video of Terre doing a weather report for Channel 6 in the YouTube video clip below. Look at that hair!
It is unclear how the couple first met. We do know that Marvin’s relationship with Carole Bayer Sager ended around 1980, although they still remained friends and he continued to write songs that she performed. Then he turned his attention to Emma Samms, but by the late 1980s there was a new love in his life, one that would last for eternity.
He married Terre Blair on March 6th, 1989 in a star-studded Jewish wedding in New York that included notable luminaries Liza Minnelli, Carly Simon, and Ann-Margret. Roberta Flack sang and so did Hamlisch himself, who penned a song for the occasion that included the words “Life is waiting, Terre it’s time, loving you is so easy to do.” Aww how sweet! You can read a recap of their big day here.
So the couple celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary earlier this year in 2012. You can see how gorgeous she looked in her wedding picture below, with her blond hair and huge veil over a beautiful white wedding gown. They had no children between them. In fact, Marvin had no children among his various life partners who preceded Terre. I find that interesting juxtaposed against the current day and age, when babies and show business seem to go together like robotic factories producing automobiles.
So on this day, our heart go out to Terre Blair Hamlisch. Her loss is all of our loss, but we can never feel the depths of their relationship and the anguish for losing a life partner. His music will live for eternity and for that we can all be thankful.
