The Abby Wambach punched video is making its rounds online today after the crazy events that took place at an Olympic soccer match between the USA and Colombia. Outrage is spreading and you have to see the video to believe it.
I thought the Olympics were the prime of everyone’s career. It should be a time when everyone has great sportsmanship and shows all of their fans how to be the best. That is not exactly what happened during a recent soccer match.
Wambach was playing very aggressively during the match and even had a fun run-ins with the player named “Lady Andrade.” I find it absolutely ridiculous that this girl’s name is Lady because she is anything but.
Anyway, they were playing along and here is what happened in Abby’s words:
“I’m running toward the goal to get position, and I got sucker-punched.”
Well, she just kept that version of events simple and plain, but that is exactly what happened. According to Abby the referees never even noticed it and the game just went on. That’s crazy because she was actually laying on the ground in pain right after it.
Anyway, Abby thinks that the opponent was trying to get her to retaliate, but she took the high road:
“We like to call it ‘ice’ – stay ice cold. They’re trying to get me to retaliate, and I’m proud of myself for not doing that.”
She also said:
“Absolutely. It’s interesting – you think about yourself and what you would do on the street if somebody were to sucker-punch you…And you have all of the lists of things that you would probably do to retaliate, but this is Olympics and I can’t risk getting a red card, I can’t risk getting a yellow card…”
That is crazy stuff. She then Tweeted the picture of herself you can see above writing:
“Thanks for all the well wishes. Eye is healing fine.”
So it goes without saying that there should be some kind of investigation into this thing. According to reports, the tape will be turned over to FIFA and the Olympic committee so with any luck this “lady” can be disqualified from playing or at least get some kind of fine or something.
It bothers me that the referees didn’t notice it when it happened, but I guess that was just bad luck. We’ll see what happens with this one next.
