Of all the tragic news coming out of Colorado in the wake of the shooting melee, we do have one piece of good news to report for victim Patricia Legarreta. Jarell Brooks is the heroic man who saved her life and those of her four month old baby after their father Jamie Rohrs had placed the baby on the ground for protection during the stampede which followed.

Patricia Legarreta’s ordeal was relived in an interview on the Today Show which you can watch at the link below. She describes how Jarell Brooks was sitting near her as the shooting broke out and remained calm while she herself panicked. Her boyfriend and father of her baby, Jamie Rohrs had put the baby on the floor and been swept away in the mass of humanity which flowed rapidly toward the exit doors.

Now she has a new future husband. Jamie has proposed to Patricia and she has formally accepted so wedding bells are in the air, although in a bittersweet way given all of the victims in this tragedy and the shock they must be feeling today. As I read about their experience on the internet I am struck by the level of criticism leveled at him. In reality nobody knows how they would react in a situation like this and human survival instincts take over. He did the best he could under the circumstances.

He popped the question at the hospital where she was recovering from a minor bullet wound. She was one of the lucky ones because as we know over 50 people were shot and thirteen have passed away as of the time of this writing.

As for her biography, Patricia Legarreta is a graduate of New Mexico State University currently living in Aurora, Colorado.

Her boyfriend Jamie Rohrs has a Facebook page here where you can see the baby that was saved by the good deed doer Jarell. Jamie graduated from the University of New Mexico with a pharmacy degree. They both moved together from New Mexico to Colorado within the last few months.

Jarell Brooks has a Facebook page here. He is originally from Minnesota and now also lives in fateful Aurora, Colorado and you can see that he likes his action heroes! By the way, I will forevermore look differently at young black men with their baseball hats on backwards. Just being honest.
