In a heartfelt letter written on Tumblr to come out of the closet, singer Frank Ocean explains that he is gay, or perhaps more accurately bisexual because he still likes women. The very interesting letter is partially reprinted below, but what is setting Twitter afire is speculation about the name of his gay lover, or boyfriend, or whatever we call such a love interest.

The black entertainment site is reporting that they know the name of Frank Ocean’s gay love interest based on internet gossip and rumors. We think that is fairly thin reporting but you can see what they have to say about it at the link below.

You can read the entire “gay love letter” here on his website which reads in part:

“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realised I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless.”

Fan reactions have been predictably mixed, from the usual kind of hate speech expressed by obtuse people to a surprising amount of support. Here are some examples from other users on Tumblr:

youwanttogetblasted: “In all seriousness I love the way Frank came out to the public..his letter was beautiful.”

crooksandcounterfeits: “People need to realize that at the end of the day, Frank is a child of God, and like us all, he has to experience things in order to bring his passion to light. Who are we to judge this man based on his sexuality? ”

insane-atbest: “I’ve actually gained my respect for my boy Frank Ocean after he came out. I will always love him and his music.”

Frank Ocean’s mom also tweeted a very supportive statement you can find on her Twitter page. It reads “My son is brave and honest and I am very proud of him. I wish more people in the world could be brave enough to be who they really are.” She has followed up with other comments directed at fans which you can read here.

Meanwhile you can read the reporting here and find speculation about the name of Frank Ocean’s bisexual love interest on Media Takeout. We had a link to it but the site appears to be redirecting so it is removed temporarily. A snippet is here: “The man in the story he claims is ’19 years old’ but people on Twitter are saying that the dude he’s talking about is OLDER, and a popular rapper.”

Reader thoughts about Frank Ocean’s bisexual confession? Should be no bid deal confessing you are gay this day and age, but there seems to be a special stigma about black recording artists that makes this a courageous decision.
