Meet Sophia Rankin of the Cayman Islands, merely an accountant by trade who finds herself at the center of a political scandal involving the colonial British governor and ambassador’s son. Max Taylor, son of Governor Duncan Taylor, fathered an illegitimate child with the woman, and now the news has hit the press.

Sophia Rankin is 27 years old and an accountant with Randyke Villas Ltd., a prestigious management consulting firm in the Cayman Islands. She reportedly met Max Taylor at a New Year’s Eve party in 2010. The baby named Serenity was born about nine months later. You do the math.

Whether the child was the product of a one-night stand, we cannot say. But we do know that the couple did not date long if at all. “Max and I are not together. It never worked out between us and he does not live with me and the baby,” Miss Rankin told the press.

But before we consider her a Cinderella story and he a prince, there is something of a role reversal taking place in this story. She is the daughter of a business man, who made it in life on the sweat of his brow. And she has followed in his father’s entrepreneurial footsteps by securing a challenging job herself, one born of hard work in school and perseverance. Her accounting job required a strong education and she labors tirelessly for long hours while her baby waits at home for her mother to return.

He on the other hand was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has apparently made nothing useful of his life. Max Taylor is from a long lineage of ambassadors who served the British crown, including his father, grandfather, and great grandfather. In political circles, Max Taylor would be considered a made man, and yet the 25-year old grown man works as a low paid pool attendant at the Ritz-Carlton hotel when he isn’t busy knocking up hard working women in the Cayman Islands.

And apparently, he hasn’t been a big influence in his child’s life at all. He reportedly has only seen cute baby Serenity a couple of times, and the financial support that Sophia Rankin receives is really from his father.

Unlike the handsome prince who rescues Cinderella with a single slipper, Max Taylor told the press: “The last year has been the worst of my life. I wasn’t ready to be a father and I am not with the mother.” Read more here.

Who needs him anyway. Sophia Rankin is doing just fine all by herself, and her baby will follow in the footsteps of her hard-working mom and grandfather. Of that I am sure.
