Here are the Sarah Silverman abortion photos, before and after, which the comedian posted on her Twitter page yesterday. The controversial images are intended as a joke, but most of the fan reaction is that the joke is really on her. Laugh lines falling flat are a comedian’s worst nightmare.
A lot of women are hopping mad over the pictures including some of her own fans. Some negative comments are from the typical characters in the pro-life crowd just as one would expect. But many of the critics are pro-choice women who believe the images make light of a serious decision that prospective moms may need to make someday.
Just a few women are supporting Sarah Silverman’s abortion tweets. They are the liberal-minded pro-choice proponents who see the photographs as a useful political statement. Everybody has an opinion about them.
There is no knowing for sure why Silverman did it. She is a liberal activist but her livelihood depends on being funny almost all the time. Pissing off a large group of your fans and potential fans is not a good way to continue on the celebrity gravy train. And yet she made a video five years ago spoofing her trip to an abortion clinic. And she has made the subject part of her comedy routine on stage.
The controversial pictures were tweeted on April 12th. This is the first photo which looks very much like Sarah Silverman is pregnant. The caption to this image read “It’s a burrito!”
And that was the setup to her joke as the very next tweet was another pic showing a large scar on Sarah’s belly after an abortion. The caption simply read “Got a quickie aborsh in case R v W gets overturned.”
Responses to the two posts are overwhelmingly negative. You can read them here and here.
Here is a typical responses from a user named Satyajit Dash which I have edited for proper punctuation.
It is not funny.
Every woman has the right to abort a baby.
But it is not a laughing matter.
You know nothing about humor.
I think your mother made a mistake …now was that funny?.
Sarah’s tweets may hurt her career in the long run as she will probably lose more fans than she gains, although one suspects that her core supporters will remain quite loyal. After all she is somewhat of a hero among feminists. How much of her fan-base will say adios is a matter of speculation. My own opinion is probably not much.
But if she was seeking publicity Sarah Silverman achieved her goal. The twitter pictures have raised the dander of women everywhere on the internet.
One thing is for sure. As a joke the pictures just aren’t that funny no matter what your view on abortion. Sarah Silverman probably regrets them already. I am wondering what your own view is, dear reader. Please let us know.
