Amber Rose graces the cover of Cosmopolitan South Africa and denounces sexism and double standards. She notes that she is still stigmatized for having been a stripper while Channing Tatum is celebrated for it.
The 32-year-old entertainer and mogul iscurrently competing on Dancing with the Stars season 23 with pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She opens up about her past. She notes that she began stripping at age 15 and did so to help support her family. She resumed the profession from age 18 to 25.
She goes on to draw the contrast between how actor Channing Tatum’s stripper past is regarded versus hers. She says, “He even made a movie about being a stripper! And everyone bought it and they loved it and they were like, ‘Oh, my God, ‘Magic Mike’, we gotta go see it!’
She adds, “But if I did that, people would tell me I was disgusting.”
She goes on to note that she has moved on since those days and yet the stigma persists. She says, “I run eight businesses, I’m the CEO of my own company, and still I’m called a stripper. It’s so ridiculous. We’ve had the same life, [Channing] and I, and I’m dumbed down for it. It’s not his fault – it’s just society.”
Yes, the contrast is very telling. Channing Tatum has made not one but two movies, portraying a stripper, and unabashedly embracing his past foray into the adult entertainment business. Not only that, but as was announced earlier this year, a stage version, Magic Mike Live’ is set to premiere in Las Vegas.
It’s become quite the cottage industry. You’d be hard pressed to find any negative coverage of the Magic Mike franchise. Yes, so many articles and interviews were devoted to outright celebration of his choice, and not to mention, the curiosity about the diet and workout he pursued to achieve a toned and fit physique.
Amber Rose is known not just for her stripper past, but for being the ex-girlfriend of Kanye West and the ex-wife of Wiz Khalifa, and the mother of the latter’s three-year-old son, Sebastian.
And yet as she reveals, she stands firm in her own achievements. She says, “Everything I’ve done; I’ve worked hard for. Anyone can have fame, but I’ve started companies. I’ve brought my brand to the next level. Nobody did that but me. No one is going to dim my light.”
It begs the question. How did she achieve such resolve and self-confidence? Amber Rose says, “About two years ago, something clicked. I thought, ‘You know what? I’m just gonna do me and if people don’t like it, they don’t have to.’ It really helped me to have a happier life.”
