Lady Gaga delivered a surprise live debut performance of her new single ‘Perfect Illusion’ just hours after its release. At the Moth Club in London, the superstar entertainer delivered a spirited rendition of her first solo single in three years.
The 30-year-old Lady Gaga returned to her roots so to speak, with her new single ‘Perfect Illusion’ — an infectious anthem. It falls right in the nexus of the dance-EDM genre that saw her skyrocket to fame in the late Aughts with such hits as ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Bad Romance.’
She co-wrote and co-produced the single with Mark Ronson, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala as well as Grimes collaborator Bloodpop. Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age is heard on guitar. It’s the lead single of her long-anticipated fifth solo album and, as such it’s also her first solo single in three years.
Yes, it’s been an eventful three years since her 2013 album ‘Artpop,’ an album that divided critics and was, commercially speaking, her least successful. Those years saw her take an abrupt departure from pop music and record a critically acclaimed solo album, ‘Cheek to Cheek’ with jazz legend Tony Bennett. She nabbed an Oscar nomination for her poignant ballad ‘Til It Happens to You’ from the documentary ‘The Hunting Ground.’ And, of late, she made a foray into acting in Ryan Murphy’s ‘American Horror Story: Hotel.’
But on a Friday night, she was in London at Moth Club delivering a rousing performance of the new song, clad in a similar outfit as in the single cover art; silver short-shorts and a crop top that was so cropped it verged on wardrobe malfunction.
And the new music has been well received, the lyric video quickly went viral racking up more than 10 million views on YouTube in just a few days. As EW reports, she said of it, “The song is about modern ecstasy… We found our sweet, simple, rage-y way of saying it.” She added, “I get this sick adrenaline rush every time I hear it.”
