Britney Spears performed her new single ‘Make Me’ and spoke about her newly released album ‘Glory’ in a special appearance on the ‘Today Show.’ In the rare TV interview the pop icon opened up about the new release, her Las Vegas residency and more.
If it seems like the pop music icon has been everywhere lately, well, it’s because she has. She even returned to the stage at the MTV VMAs for the first time in nine years. It’s all part of the massive rollout for her ninth studio album.
Three years into her ‘Piece of Me’ residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, her latest album, ‘Glory,’ is out, and it was two years in the making, as she has said in previous years. It’s her first album since ‘Billie Jean’ which was released in late 2013 and coincided with the start of her residency. The album received mixed reviews and was her lowest charting album of her career.
Needless to say, the three-year hiatus plus the disappointing sales of that album put extra pressure on this, her ninth album, which some have dubbed a comeback.
She didn’t grace The Plaza at Rockefeller Center for a live Today Show concert, but instead, the show met her in Vegas. In an in interview with Today Show’s Natalie Morales — conducted in Las Vegas for broadcast on the morning talk show — Britney Spears pushed back against that perception. She said of ‘Glory,’ “I don’t really see it as a comeback.” She went on to say, “I think I’ve never really left. I’ve always been here.”
She went on to say it was “just like maybe a reinvention of myself and just a different time in my life — a really good, glorious time.”
The album leaked days in advance of its official release and, according to the industry projections, it will debut at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In all fairness, we must note that she had intense competition, with country superstar duo Florida Georgia Line topping the chart, with ‘Dig Your Roots’ and the legendary Barbra Streisand’s 35th album ‘Partners’ claiming the No. 2 spot.
