The death of Juan Gabriel, the legendary Mexican music artist, at age 66, is a shock to the Latin music world. Many fellow artists are taking to Twitter and other social media to pay tribute. Here’s a roundup of condolences and tributes for the icon.
As Rolling Stone reports, Juan Gabriel died on Sunday morning, August 28th in Los Angeles of a massive heart attack. His death, at age 66, is quite sudden and has the entertainment world reeling. He was in the midst of the U.S. leg of hisMeXXico Es Todos tour. He had also released a new album just last week, ‘Vestido de Etiqueta: Por Eduardo Magallanes,’ which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Top Latin Albums chart.
The publication further reports that the family released a written statement, which reads in part: “Alberto Aguilera Valadez ‘Juan Gabriel’ passed away suddenly earlier today as has been widely reported. Juan Gabriel was a giant in the music industry and is as popular now as ever. As importantly, Juan Gabriel was a beloved father and grandfather. He is survived by his sons and grandchildren.”
Juan Garcia was bestselling Mexican music artist of all time. While he may not have been a household name in North America, he was, nonetheless, as Billboard reports, indisputably ensconced as one of the top music artists in the world — and in particular a top touring artist — of any genre. He ranked at No. 18 on the Billboard 2015 Money Makers list — sandwiched between Ed Sheeran and Florida Georgia Line. Last year, his was the highest-grossing tour of any Latin artist and similarly his album ‘Los Duo’ was the top selling Latin album.
As the news was confirmed many of his fellow artists reacted to the tragic loss, and expressed grief, sorrow and shared remembrances. You can see a roundup of what’s being said on Twitter and other social media of the amazing and larger-than-life artist who, sadly, is no longer with us.
