Ashley Graham is responding to critics after she posted an Instagram photo that some took as evidence that she lost weight. The model who rose to fame advocating body positivity for women of all sizes and physiques is now pushing back against those who attack her for — of all things! — apparent weight loss.
Well, this was inevitable, sadly. The 28-year-old rising star who made history as the “plus size” model model to grace the cover of the iconic Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is now facing backlash. Normally, we would expect weight loss to be greeted with cheers and accolades. But let’s face it, we are not in normal times. Social media has become the megaphone for those whom we would never have heard of.
Well, this time around, Ashley Graham innocently posted a photo of herself on Instagram which you can see below, and captioned it “Glam squad magic.” Frankly, if anything that was an understatement. Graham looks absolutely stunning in figure-hugging white crop top and white skirt and a black leather jacket. The question ought to be where did she get the fabulous outfit?
But no, that was not how the discussion went.
You would have thought this was the end of the world as we know it. Social media erupted and the shaming began. We’re not going to repeat the disgusting comments and give these anonymous critics any more of a platform than they’ve already seized. But suffice it to say the words were not kind and there are lots of them on the pic in question which you can see below.
Ashley Graham has, of course, responded, in her typical candor. She said, “People come on my page and body shame me because I’m too big, because I’m too small, because I’m not good enough for their standards…But at the end of the day I’m good enough for me. Angles will make anyone look bigger or smaller and I just happen to know mine.”
And on Snapchat she continued to stand her ground, and posted a photo of herself in lingerie on the catwalk over which she superimposed the text: “I will not let others dictate what they think my body should look like for their own comfort, and neither should you.”
She has fought back, yes, but it’s the same narrative we’ve seen too much lately. Celebrity is trolled. The trolling makes headlines. The trolls get quoted. (Although, very pointedly not here!)
And yet, every time we take note of such trolling and we see celebrities respond, well, that’s just further encouragement for this despicable “sport” that some are engaged in. Would that they would develop an addiction to Pokemon Go instead!
As for Ashley Graham, weight loss or not, she looks fabulous not so much for the fashions she wears or the number on the scale, but for the self-confidence she reveals and the way she’s inspired other women to have such confident and self-esteem apart from what they may look like in the mirror. You can see the pics below.
