‘Equals’ is dystopian sci-fi drama directed by Drake Doremus. It’s highly anticipated, and it’s finally making its way to the theaters. It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year and it’s continued to make the prestigious festival circuit ever since, including the Toronto and Tribeca festivals earlier this year.

Now at long last, the L.A. premiere at ArcLight Hollywood. Kristen Stewart is getting quite a buzz for the stunning black lace Jonathan Simkhai dress. Delicate and intricate and yet also quite daring and revealing, it’s a flattering look for the star who has recently gone platinum blond. The look harks back to the 1920s flapper era with a flared trumpet skirt. But daring as life was back then, these sheer panels belie the nostalgia. It’s as racy as it is retro. For his part, Nicholas Hoult is stylish in a but, let’s face it, his costar is getting all the attention!

To be certain, the movie is also getting a buzz even as it polarizes critics. In it Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult portray characters who live in a world where emotions are eradicated. Falling in love becomes perilous as they are afflicted with what’s considered a disease in that world, Switched on Syndrome (S.O.S.), the ability to feel human emotion.

Stewart opened up about the movie, and portraying a character discovering human emotions for the first time. She told THR, “It just became the most bleak, awful…It’s so sad.” She went on to say, “”What was really painful was not feeling. What was truly really exhausting was to just be dead.”

She told Variety how she felt about the director’s unusual approach to helping her and her costar find chemistry. She said, “It wasn’t about learning lines” She elaborated, adding. “It was about breaking down barriers and getting to know each other.”

And as the movie arrives in theaters, the debate goes on. A significant film of merit or a misfire, that seems to be how the critics are divided.
