Ashley Graham was stunning and curvaceous in a red bikini, as she debuted a new swimwear line in Las Vegas. You can see the photos and video that social media is buzzing about, as the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model continues her trailblazing ways.
Now, here she, the trailblazer that she is, is on Fourth of July weekend in Las Vegas and, naturally we most cite the cliche — what happened didn’t stay in Vegas! Not a chance! Ashley Graham
No, not a chance when a self-described “curva-sexalicious” model is strutting around in a fire engine red string bikini poolside at Marquee Dayclub in Las Vegas. These images are now all over Instagram in particular. It’s all part of the ‘Don’t Mind the Gap’ empowerment campaign launched by the retailer Swimsuits for All whose name pretty much summed up their mission. The new campaign takes on the notorious “thigh gap” that has seen far too many try to diet and exercise to excess — and even to emotional and physical harm — in hopes of attaining.
Here we are in the second decade of the 21st century, and it’s newsworthy that a curvy model whose body doesn’t fit the fashion runway norm debuts a swimwear line for women who similarly aren’t in that norm. Well, sobeit, this s where we are in our pop cultural history.
The 28-year-old Ashley Graham has launched a successful modeling career and now a burgeoning fashion empire by catering to the majority who have too long felt slighted and even shamed by mostly unattainable standards of beauty. Along with her involvement with Swimsuits for All, she’s got her own fashion line in partnership with Dressbarn. No doubt that’s just the beginning.
When Ashley Graham covered Maxim — a historic first right there, just like the SI swimsuit cover — she also opened up about her ambitions, telling the magazine (for those few who could tear themselves away from the pics) that she’s inspired by celebrity entrepreneurs who have built billion dollar businesses. She cited Jessica Simpson’s fashion empire and Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company in particular, saying, ” “I know these celebrity entrepreneurs are just people. They’ve just been given the right opportunities and have soared with them. And that’s what I’m trying to do.”
And yes, we are watching that unfold right now. Two or three years from now, Ashley Graham will be among them. It may not even take that long, frankly. After all, not ever model parlays the big break like a SI Swimsuit cover so quickly. The vast majority are eventually forgotten or they may cross over into acting perhaps if lucky.
