The tragic news was reported by TMZ and other media outlets early on Sunday. As CNN reported, quoting an LAPD spokesperson, the accident occurred at his home in Studio City, California in the early hours of Sunday morning. Anton Yelchin got out of his car, which then rolled backwards, pinning him against a brick pillar and a security fence and he died from the trauma.

The ‘Star Trek’ reboot brought Yelchin international fame as he appearing in all of the movies, including the forthcoming ‘Star Trek Beyond’ which is due out in July. But years before that he was drawing notice from critics even as a child actor, dating back to the 2001 Scott Hicks drama “Hearts in Atlantis.” A few years later, he starred opposite Justin Timberlake and Bruce Willis in ‘Alpha Dog’ in 2006.

With his untimely death, he leaves behind a few as yet unreleased movies including the aforementioned ‘Star Trek Beyond’ as well as another sci-fi drama, ‘Rememory’ opposite ‘Game of Thrones’ star Peter Dinklage. Before his death, he also completed the thriller ‘Thoroughbred’ and the drama ‘We Don’t Belong Here.’

But without a doubt, his legacy, shortened tragically, is forever entwined with ‘Star Trek’ and it was those fellow members of that universe who were among the first to react on social media and to pay tribute. Director JJ Abrams Tweeted a photo of his handwritten tribute saying, “You were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell and supremely talented. You weren’t here nearly long enough.”

Here’s a roundup of what others are saying.

Rest in peace Anton
