Beyonce was the surprise winner of the award at the annual CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) awards ceremony held in New York City. In a break from precedent, rhe award was not announced in advance.

In the absence of an announced winner, as Vogue reports, there was speculation that perhaps in her last year as First Lady, Michelle Obama might be the recipient. But the winner, announced by CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, taking to the podium in a stunning sparking Givenchy pinstripe pantsuit with a wide-brim black hat (photos below) was none other than the woman who embodies and typifies “Bootylicious” after the iconic song.

But, as she revealed in her acceptance speech, such celebration and acceptance was not immediate and she explained in her narrative. She began by saying, “As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life.”

She went on to say, “When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black, country curvy girls. And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture.”

She then spoke of her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, who was present at the ceremony and who over the years has achieved notoriety in her own right as fashion designer, who designed the costumes for her and her fellow members. She said, “My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.”

Continuing, she said, “My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail.”

Beyonce said that in wearing the clothing she she “had an extra suit of armor” that was “so much deeper than any brand name.”

Beyonce continued to pay tribute to her mother as she noted that she had designed her wedding dress, her prom dress as well as her first CFDA Awards and Grammy Awards dresses. She said, “And this to me is the true power and potential of fashion. It’s a tool for finding your own identity. It transcends style, and it’s a time capsule of all of our greatest milestones.”

You can read the full transcript here (via Vogue) as Beyonce goes on to pay tribute to the designers and to the industry as a whole and the impact it has on people’s lives. She said, on part, “You have the power to change perception, to inspire and empower, and to show people how to embrace their complications, and see the flaws, and the true beauty and strength that’s inside all of us.”

It’s no surprise the speech as been well-received as she strikes an eloquent tone and yet does not sugarcoat the reality of the industry.
