Ryan Seacrest’s commencement speech at the University of Georgia is going viral, and you can see the full video right here. Find out what the entertainment mogul and former host of ‘American Idol’ had to say to the UGA graduating class and how a selfie stick figured into the mix!
Yes, you read that correctly. There was a selfie stick! The 42-year-old Dunwoody, Georgia native dropped out of UGA in 1992 after just one year. He moved to Hollywood and, as they say, the rest is history.
For him a wise decision to literally drop everything and follow his dream and, of course, as a caveat, to do the hard work to make those dreams come true. At the time, his ambition was a career in radio and that’s just one of the many areas in entertainment that he has found success.
Now, years later, the school bestowed him with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. His entire commencement speech delivered before a graduating class of 4,343 at Sanford Stadium was posted to YouTube and has quickly gone viral.
As the school’s newspaper, The Red & Black, reports, he delivered inspiring words to the graduating class, and with them a sense of urgency.
He said in part, “Days come and go fast. And the older I get the more I realize that your life will happen whether or not you get up…Make sure you happen to the day instead of it happening to you.”
Continuing, he added, “If something is important, the best time for it to happen is right now. And if it’s not important, then move on to something that is.”
To say the very least, Ryan Seacrest has lived out those words of advice. As he concluded, he said, “Class of 2016 this is your day, and your amazing life is waiting for you. Go make it happen.”
As a part of his address, he used the aforementioned selfie stick to shoot a video which he later posted to Instagram, and which you can see below. With the assistance of the school’s Bulldog mascot, he captured a panoramic view of the graduating class.
