In the past several months, she’s seen more publicity than she has in arguably a decade since back in the days when ‘Hallaback Girl’ became one of the biggest hits of the 2000s. Now this time around it’s the music, yes, but it’s become so intertwined with her personal life which, of late, has not been entirely personal. Her divorce from Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale was one of those shocking splits that spawns multiple stories filled with truths, half-truths, speculation and just plain gossip.

And in released the new album, which has a notably revealing title, ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like,’ she isn’t shying away from that kind of incidental notoriety.

In an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, she spoke about that dissolution of her 13-year marriage, saying, “”At that time everything was like I had no skin, it was so raw. Nobody knew what was happening, and I had this big secret.”

She went on to say, “I was down all the way; you don’t go down lower than that. It was rock bottom. I was so embarrassed, you know what I mean? I was like, ‘Wow, I have to turn this into something, like, I can’t go down like this. If I can do music, then everything will be okay.'”

She went on to speak of how she resolved her writers block by, in her words, abandoning futile efforts in the studio and telling her team, “”Let’s write the most noncommercial, personal record ever.”

And that became the lead single, ‘Used to Love You,’ which she first debuted last summer just a couple months after the split, as the rumors were flying about Gavin Rossdale’s alleged affair with the couple’s then-nanny. The song title, much like the subsequent album title, seemed to encapsulate the story.

Stefani also opened up about Blake Shelton, who that same summer also announced a shocking divorce, from fellow country music star Miranda Lambert. She said of him, “In all of this craziness that happened, like unexpected horrible-ness, I found a friend that was going through literally the exact same thing as me. And that is a miracle, you know? And it just saved me so much, and I feel so grateful for that.”
