Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid are one steamy couple in the music video for ‘Pillowtalk’ for the former One Direction member’s long-waited debut single. The racy lyrics are matched if not exceeded by the sensuous visuals and the video is, of course, going viral.
The 23-year-old Zayn Malik has been talking up his new music and his new artistic direction in one interview after another, and now we are hearing and seeing what he’s like, unleashed from the boy band that first brought him international fame. As far as artistic launchpads go, he could have done much worse, let’s say, but as it is, his every move, in the music studio and outside of it has been closely watched by the Directioners.
Now, at last, ‘Pillowtalk,’ spelled as one word, even though auto-correction may object to it. And, as he promised in his interviews, this is a raw exploration of that “pillow talk” euphemism. Fans used to the squeaky-clean teen-idol 1D persona might be in for a jolt.
And yes, he and girlfriend, 20-year-old model Gigi Hadid have some pretty intense make-out sessions in this video that’s heavy on visual effects. This isn’t a cinematic narrative since, after all, that would distract from the business at hand. And yes, it ranges from raunchy to disarming; the imagery and the symbolism have sparked many gifs and memes on social media.
‘Pillowtalk is the lead single of what will be Zayn Malik’s debut solo album, ‘Mind of Me.’ It’s due out on March 23rd, and those who are well-versed in all things 1D know that marks the one-year anniversary that he left the group and fellow band mates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson. He signed a record deal with RCA and, in the months that have followed anticipation over the new music has been rising steadily, to say the very least.
He told L’Uomo Vogue “I just want this album to be about me and me standing on my own two feet. I’ve sung with four other voices for over four years now so I want to hear myself, alone for once.” He also said, “I never felt like I belonged in the group, I was just doing it because at the time, I felt like it was the right place for me to be.”
And liberation and artistic freedom and individuality have very much been the themes he’s been expressing lately, not least in his Twitter profile in which he proclaims, “f–k whoever tells you no ! do you, be proud and love lots.” Bluntly expressed, it’s his declaration of independence. Who knows what else the rest of the album may bring, but he’s become a hit on social media as fans are busy dissecting it all!
