Steve Harvey and Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez opened up about the mix-up at the Miss Universe pageant in their first joint TV interview. In another, behind-the-scenes interview, broadcast on the Today Show, the world learned new details about those moments on live television that saw Harvey mistakenly name Miss Columbia as the winner when Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the rightful winner.
The actor, comedian and host of his eponymous daytime TV talk show, Steve Harvey sat alongside Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez as they spoke with Natalie Morales in an interview on Today Show. Morales herself was once a contestant in the pageant years ago.
The interview was recorded behind the scenes after the taping of that two-part special which was broadcast on The Steve Harvey Show (highlights and photos below). Billed as “Miss Universe: The Truth” all three in this drama had their say, including, Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Philippines, although she and Miss Colombia did not appear in the same segment.
Miss Colombia and Steve Harvey did, however, have an emotional and at times tearful reunion on the show. In the extended conversation, Gutierrez forgive him for his mistake. In an earlier segment he had also spoken about how the backlash had impacted him and his family, revealing that he and his family had received death threats.
Yes, all quite overblown for misnaming the winner at a beauty pageant even it it was the internationally televised Miss Universe pageant. The incident has taken on a life of its own in memes and in speculation that perhaps it was all orchestrated for publicity, of which it’s gotten heaps. Typically it takes some sort of scandalous past of a contestant to get this kind of attention. But we’re in uncharted territory here.
Steve Harvey told Morales how he felt about his mistake, and said “There was a moment for me — I mean, I was ashamed for the mistake, but I was also a little bit angry at the mistake. A lot of people could have stepped up and said, ‘I played a role in this, too, you know. I made a mistake, too.’ But nobody did.”
Now for the first time, he spoke about why he had made the mistake and thus addressing the speculation that he had not attended rehearsals, was drinking, etc.
He said, “”I read the teleprompter, and clearly I read what it said to read. And then I followed the direct instruction in my ear. We went straight from ‘And the new 2015 Miss Universe is…’ and when they said read the card, all the cards in rehearsal never had any of that on there, except the name.”
But, as we know, because on live television he held up that cue card which had both the name of the winner and the runner up, and sadly leading to vicious accusations that he was illiterate.
He went on to say, “The fact that we didn’t rehearse it that way I didn’t know any other information was going to be on that card. Had I taken a moment to look down at the card, but I was trying to keep it down so nobody saw the winner, and I blew it.”
For her part, Miss Colombia said of the error, “We are human beings, you know. Everyone is able to make mistakes.”
She said of being briefly and mistakenly crowned Miss Universe and spoke of how she was happier than she had ever been and went on to say, “I was able to make the whole country happy. Afterwards, I felt horrible. I was crying a lot. It was the worse night of my life. Now the best,” she said, alluding to the numerous offers she’s received in the aftermath, far beyond what any pageant runner-up could ever expect.
Yes, it’s been much attention for a pageant which, while without a doubt is popular, the attention has taken all involved in this incident to quite a different level. It’s been a few weeks since the infamous mix-up, and who knows how many more interviews there might be from all concerned, but for now, you can see Steve Harvey and Miss Colombia open up about Miss Universe mix-up in the video below.
