Just two days after is 69th birthday, and the release of what now, sadly, has become his final album, ‘Blackstar,’ David Bowie, the genre-defying pioneer of numerous disciplines from music to fashion, to film and much more has died.

A statement posted on his official Facebook fan page read, “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

He is survived by his wife, supermodel and entrepreneur Iman whom he married in 1992; the couple had one child together, Alexandria “Lexi” Zahra Jones. Bowie had a son from a previous marriage to Angela and his children, filmmaker Duncan Jones, who Tweeted to confirm his father’s death (below).

And for the rest of the world David Bowie leaves behind an immense legacy. Decades of influence and innovation going all the way back to the 1970s. He’s given us many iconic images, music and moments that are now indelible in pop culture, including his early hits, Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust to his mainstream success with such iconic 80s hits as ‘Let’s Dance’ and ‘China Girl.’ The influence permeates the visual world and the fashion world, as Bowie’s signature androgyny was, especially in the 1970s and 1980s pioneering and boundary-pushing.

It’s not that the innovation was over, as ‘Blackstar,’ his final album had received nearly universal critical acclaim and acknowledgement from critics that this was an artist who was forward looking, not repeating himself or becoming a pale reflection of early success and innovation.

Now, as is always the case, many were quick to take to social media to react, especially Twitter. It’s become our gathering ground in these watershed moments of collective shock, sadness and grief. Countless music artists, celebrities and public figures expressed sorrow, offered tributes and celebrated the life and legacy of David Bowie.

Here is a roundup of what is being said.

Reactions to the death of David Bowie continue to pour in, as continue to be trending topics on Twitter and many continue to share condolences, remembrances, and pay tribute to the brilliant innovator who is no longer among us.
