At long last we get our first glimpse and what a glimpse! There’s always suspense, anticipation and plenty of hope when an iconic comic book superhero make that first leap to the silver screen. In the case of Doctor Strange, in retrospect it’s long overdue. The surgeon Stephen Strange has the typical journey from private citizen to crusading superhero when he’s transformed into a sorcerer and enters the archetypal battle against evil.

The much anticipated ‘Doctor Strange’ movie is directed by Scott Derrickson and co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton. But for now it’s the title character that we’re seeing for the first time.

And yes, these images definitely deliver! That’s the overall social media consensus, which these days isn’t a given. We may hope to see our superhero in the next would-be blockbuster, but at the same time, we’re very protective.

Not only do we get six photos, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, but interspersed in the photo gallery are some of Benedict Cumberbatch’s comments on the character he’s portraying. The British actor has become an international star, after first winning acclaim as another iconic character, Sherlock Holmes in the famed BBC series. Now having graced the screen in several roles — including the villain Khan Noonien Singh in ‘Star Trek into Darkness’ and the title character ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ — in that have taken him from television star to Hollywood heavyweight this could be his most exciting role to date.

The movie is still being filmed, and Cumberbatch says of it, overall, “There’s all sorts of craziness.” He goes on to explain, and adds, “Falling, flying, jumping, fighting, punching, getting punched. It’s really rough and tumble.”

He says of his character and the intricate physicality, “I’m still in the infancy of learning all that. I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. He goes on to discuss the hand gestures and what they’ll look like, saying, There’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of [my] finger… And I’m still working on that.”

The anticipation just crept up several notches with this amazing preview. You can see all of the photos at EW here; and glimpse the cover with Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange below!
