Now 54 years old, Meg Ryan is known for quite a few iconic movies, not least,’When Harry Met Sally’ opposite Billy Crystal, and in particular a certain scene in a delicatessen. And that was more than 25 years ago, and as is so often the case, as actresses grow older, such plumb roles like that disappear.

Meg Ryan is back in the spotlight as both star and director of the movie, ‘Ithaca.’ But when women in Hollywood of a certain age make a public appearances, well, we know what the discussion centers around and it’s been the case with Meg Ryan. The “changing face” and plastic surgery rumors abound.

In speaking with Porter magazine she address this headlong saying, “There are more important conversations than how women look and how they are aging… I love my age. I love my life right now. I love what I know about. I love the person I’ve become, the one I’ve evolved into.”

She went on to reflect — “In my life I’ve been scrappy as hell, but I feel easy with things now. I think that comes with age” — and again addressed the central topic of how there is an absolute incessant focus on women’s physical appearances. She said, “We get stuck in these conversations about looks and hair color and our roots. It’s interesting and funny for five minutes, but it’s not that interesting.”

She also opened up about criticism and haters and said, “I don’t pay a lot of attention frankly. There’s a lot of hatred in the world today, it’s so easy to judge. Imagine being a hater, how stupid!”

She continued, adding, “My women friends are not sitting around talking about… well, sometimes there are conversations like that, but the people I value talk about kids growing up, what kind of world they are going into, what we are eating, what we are breathing.”

As for her love life, Meg Ryan did not name any names, and in fact revealed that there aren’t any. She said of love, ““I like It. I’m on a little break. I’m with my life right now in a way that I adore, with my kids and my world.”

She did open up a bit about her ex, John Mellencamp and said of him, “He’s world class. There’s not one speck of music that’s not his. He’s got some kind of magic touch.” And in fact, though they are no longer a couple, he wrote the music for her new movie, ‘Ithaca.’
