Angelina Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt evoked old Hollywood glamour on the red carpet of ‘By the Sea,’ their first movie together since ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’ As the pictures and video below reveal, the power couple exuded sartorial and fashion perfection at the AFI event celebrating the movie.
The event that brought the golden couple out for a rare red carpet appearance was the AFI Festival opening night gala premiere for ‘By the Sea’ in Los Angeles at the TCL Chinese Theatre. The movie is actually an art film that normally would play to small but fervent crowds of film buffs. But when the two principal characters are portrayed by the couple also known as Brangelina, well, it’s quite different. To say they’ve caused a stir with their appearance doesn’t begin to explain it.
It’s been ten years since Angelina Jolie Pitt (as she is now known, professionally) and Brad Pitt infamously got together on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005 and their onscreen chemistry was only matched by what was beginning off screen. Now, years later, the longtime couple — and still relative newlyweds — premiere quite a different movie. Taking to the director’s helm once again, Angelina Jolie Pitt directed her husband in a movie about in essence a failing marriage.
While critics have largely been unkind to the movie which traces the lives of two extremely unhappy characters, a dancer who’s given up her dream and a novelist who’s making one last try for greatness, as they wander as ex-patriots throughout Europe.
As EW.com reports, as Angelina Jolie Pitt became visibly emotional as she introduced the movie, she spoke both of her intentions, and made mention of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died at age 56 in 2007 of ovarian cancer. She said, “This film is, at the core, about grief…That grief was from the loss of my mother. But in the end, I also think this film is about learning to move past it.”
So at the very core, despite the dazzle of Hollywood and glamour, there is the wrenching real-life backstory of an immensely famous multi-hyphenate who lost her mother far too soon. Yes, it’s a movie that’s a far cry from the big-studio highly commercial ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’
Critics have not been kind in reviews, to say the least, as it’s clocking in at 29 percent at Rotten Tomatoes thus far. And whether there will be Oscar buzz despite the thumbs down from critics remains to be scene. Some members of the Academy might find something redeeming after all, and, time will tell.
