Yes, it’s been three long years since their last new music — with the exception of the surprise release the tribute song, ‘Growing Up (Sloane’s Song),’ their collaboration with Ed Sheeran which also served as an announcement that the namesake, Sloan, Macklemore’s daughter had been born a few months earlier.

Yes, hip-hop duo is back with new music, after rising to global stardom with ‘The Heist,’ and defying odds and expectations, to say nothing of stereotypes and sweeping up two Grammys.

Just as that sudden song and birth announcement came as a surprise, so too this sudden and truly celebratory ‘Downtown.’ Yes, they are back, and just hours after the world was bopping to ‘Downtown’ along came the amazing video which follows a throwback narrative as Macklemore buys a mo-ped and heads to the titular Downtown. But it’s the Downtown of a sendup, nostalgic romp back to the past.

It’s the ultimate 1970s and ’80s funk and hip-hop throwback complete with a music video that’s got a staggering number of cameos of icons from those long-ago days. Just a few of those who make their way across the screen Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel, and Eric Nally.

In an interview, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis told Ryan Seacrest, “It took a really, really long time to make this one…We spent like a year and a half on it. It is a song celebrating the love of two wheels — whether that be a moped or a motorcycle.”

As for all the legendary artists on the track they said, “That’s the first time that they’ve ever recorded on one record. So that was really awesome to have that moment be shared on one of our songs.”

And it is quite a tribute, and perhaps now a classic. We can likely count the days, if not the hours, before the song becomes an international hit.
