Yes, the 33-year-old Serena Williams, in a word is stunning — it’s the same word that dominates headlines and social media all over the world. It’s not a matter of copycat; we know when we are stunned, and we are just that!

She is seen in a series of photos by famed photographer Norma Jean Roy, some of which you can see below. It’s no wonder they have quickly gone viral on social media. It’s a celebration both of the art of photography and the marvelous athletic physique and prowess of one of the world’s most famous athletes.

So yes, New York Magazine has nailed it this year, in their fashion issue. But there’s more than just this amazing pictures, Serena Williams delivers a powerful message to readers in her interview.

She said of her storied career in tennis, recently capped off this year with a Grand Slam, “I didn’t think it would last this long…But even if it was over…it’s a really long career.”

Later in the interview, asked how it felt “to bear “the weight of representing people of color,” Serena Williams said, “I don’t think about it.” She added, “I don’t dwell in the past. If I do, I’ll be swallowed up by negativity. As Mandela once said, ‘I will be in a mental prison.’ ”

Quotes are sparing, as much of the article is a rumination upon her legacy and that of her sister, Venus Williams and their father Richard Williams. After so many years, it’s easy to forget what trailblazers the Williams sisters really are, and that in the 2010s, the trailblazing is far from over.
