FKA Twigs speaks out about the challenges of her sudden fame that has come with dating Robert Pattinson in a rare interview and spoke out on the severity of social media bullying and backlash she and even her fans have received. She also revealed that she has never seen ‘The Twilight Saga’ movies that gave her boyfriend his international fame.

She has risen to international fame perhaps much faster than she might have. Sure, the the 27-year-old performance artist FKA Twigs — stage name of Tahliah Barnett — was drawing notice already, after all, having one’s album shortlisted for the much coveted Mercury Prize in the UK is no small feat. Such was the case for her last year with her ‘LP1.’

But now as the girlfriend and presumed fiance of Robert Pattinson, she acknowledged she was unprepared for just what that would mean for her personal life. In an interview with The Sunday Times, she said, “I don’t understand what the levels [of fame] are. I’m a bit naïve…I don’t engage in that world, even with myself, even with my own career.”

In fact, she spoke out earlier this year in an extensive interview with The New York Times, ostensibly about her own career but, such as the case often is, her remarks about her relationship with Robert Pattinson were the ones that went viral. She expressed her dismay at the time, of her sudden and “awful” fame, saying, “It makes you want to just stop everything sometimes. It makes you want to smash your face into the mirror.”

Strong words and this time around, with The Sunday Times, she speaks about the dating the famous star, and doesn’t soft pedal what it has meant. In the previous interview, the biracial FKA Twigs — who is of British, Spanish and Jamaican ancestry — spoke about the racism she’d been subjected to on social media and the vicious name calling.

She revealed that now the cyberbullies had gone after her fans, in particular a man who had Tweeted her letting her know that her music was cheering up his friend who was dying of cancer. And then, the thinkable (or so we would wish) happened. FKA Twigs said, “They all started attacking her. Within 20 seconds it was just like n*****, monkey, ugly, die b****, all this stuff on his feed. It broke my heart… this lady who is really sick and is probably going to die.”

Later in the interview, she spoke of her own upbringing saying, “I was very conscious of it. I was half-Jamaican, but I didn’t understand that side of myself. Western society tells you if you’re blonde, you’re beautiful; if you have green eyes, you’re beautiful; if you have fair skin, you’re beautiful.”

She also shared the strong and affirming words that her stepfather had given her: “Sometimes you’re going to have to work 10 times harder than somebody else to get the same appreciation, but never use it as an excuse. I agree with that.”

Asked how her relationship with Robert Pattinson was affecting her creativity, she said, “No, I don’t think it works like that. Don’t you get freedom with age and experience, not confines.” She was also asked in the interview if she had seen any of ‘The Twilight Saga’ movies, and she said she hadn’t.

You can see more excerpts of the interview here. As noted, it was a rare interview with FKA Twigs, but, as before, she offered a sobering glimpse into the other side of our celebrity-obsessed culture, when one becomes the brunt of it.
