The 22-year-old pop music star is back on the scene as just that, a pop music star. She’s been dividing her time in recent years with other ventures, as author of “Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year” of a self-help book for teens, as a spokesperson for mental health — going on a Sunovion Pharmaceuticals-sponsored tour as such, and not least, as an erstwhile judge of the now cancelled ‘The X Factor USA.’

So in case we forgot that yes, Demi Lovato is also a pop music star, by the way, she has reminded us with the premiere of ‘Cool for the Summer.’

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his eponymous radio show, she said of the new song and he return to the music scene, “It’s like I’ve spent so long just kind of people-pleasing, making everybody happy with being the best role model I can be.”

She continued, saying, “At the end of the day, yes, I am outspoken about the things I believe in: Mental health advocacy work. I have a charity. I have these things that make me a role model. But, at the same time, none of these things are really representing the badass that I am.”

As for her new single ‘Cool for the Summer’ she said, “It’s basically going to be your song of the summer. It’s very fun. It’s definitely more provocative. I just think the more you listen to it, the more things it can mean.”

The song leaked to the Internet a day ahead of its official premiere and social media was abuzz with reactions from fans and detractors alike, some who suggested she was trying to imitate Katy Perry and other reigning pop music superstars.

She went on to characterize her new music saying that she is carving out a new territory for herself as a self-described “badass.” Lovato said, “There’s nobody in the pop industry that says, ‘Don’t f–k with me. There’s Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. Those two women, they’re like, ‘I’ll kick your f–king a-s.’ And that’s the thing. I’m totally that, but in pop music.”
