When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in every state, there was an immediate and jubilant reaction on Twitter, as celebrities and public figures expressed their enthusiasm over the landmark 5-4 decision that clears the way for gay and lesbian couples to marry. On the final day of the Supreme Court session, the ruling in the was announced, and to say there was jubilation in social media in general and among celebrities in particular is an understatement. Quickly #LoveWins was trending on Twitter, and when one added the hashtag, Twitter automatically added a rainbow heart.

Rainbow flags and rainbow motifs were everywhere in social media. And on the eve of the annual commemoration of the Stonewall riots in 1969 that were the catalyst for our contemporary LGBT activism, the timing was perfect even if, in retrospect, it immediately feels shockingly overdue.

Not surprisingly, Ellen DeGeneres, quite the pioneer coming out more than a dozen years ago, was among the first to react. Married to actress in 2008 before Proposition 8 in California, she has been a trailblazer. She Tweeted: Love won. #MarriageEquality

Also responding quickly on Twitter, Apple CEO Tim Cook who recently came out. He Tweeted: “Today marks a victory for equality, perseverance and love.” In a second Tweet, he quoted the late co-founder of Apple: “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
