Selena Gomez opened up about the music in her new album which she said will “hint” at her past relationship with Justin Bieber. It was among the topics she address in a wide-ranging and candid interview with Ryan Seacrest.
The pop music superstar is back with a new song, ‘Good for You,’ which features rapper A$AP Rocky and demonstrating a markedly more mature sound and, along with it, a more grownup sensibility and she confirmed her enthusiasm for her new direction during her interview on “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.”
Notably, for the curious, she confirmed that in her new album she is not shying away from dealing with her past relationship with Justin Bieber.
She said, “I think there’s hints of it, but I think what I was really excited about was… the rebirth of Selena. It’s just beautiful. It’s my chance to just feel like an independent artist, and I worked really hard on it. So I guess that’s just the vision. It’s all about my journey. It’s not about something specific.”
She went on to speak of how she is “finding my strengths now as an artist.”
And indeed, it’s clear she’s traveled quite a journey from her Disney star roots. She had already debuted an explosively personal song, ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants,’ which was underscored with an emotional preamble, “I felt like I know him, I know his heart, and I know what he wouldn’t do to hurt me.”
In the new interview she candidly assessed herself saying, “I’m not the best singer in the world, but I know how to translate emotion. I’m becoming a young woman, and I’m comfortable with my sensuality.” She continued, saying, “I think to me that was exactly what I wanted people to see for the next chapter for me.”
As for the new album — as yet untitled and sans release date — she said, ““I’ve really taken my time with this record. I have people behind me that support my vision completely, and now I’m kind of on my own in a way and this is the first time that I’ve ever grabbed ahold of something.”
It will be her first album with her new record label, Interscope. She went on to say of it, “I’m not going to let anybody else try to alter my vision or tell me I need to do something. I’m very confident in this record and you can hear it.”
Continuing, she went on say of the new music, “I’m vulnerable, I’m real, and I think it just shows a different side of me, and I’m really excited, and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”
Needless to say, the highly candid interview instantly went viral in social media, and Selena Gomez to Twitter to acknowledge the support of her fans saying, ” “Thank you. This next record will be my perspective on the past two years. From kindness to pain. This is me.”
The new song, which had its official premiere the same day as the interview is notably enticing and sultry, with such lines as “Gonna wear that dress you like, skin-tight. Do my hair up real, real nice.” So while there may be pain in the past, she’s making it clear that she’s also looking to the future.
