Kacey Musgraves”Biscuits’ music video has premiered and it’s a tasty romp through nostalgic country music history with scenes reminiscent of 1960s television variety shows back in the days when the genre was still called “country western.”
While some go for raciness in music videos, Kacey Musgraves shows that a nod to nostalgia — albeit a twisted and quirky one — will get just the same results. And such is the case with the ‘Biscuits’ narrative.
The Grammy-winning singer premiered the music video on Buzzfeed Music where she is quoted as describing it in a single memorable phrase, “Hee-Haw meets Pee Wee’s Playhouse meets Wes Anderson.” Yes, that just about sums it up!
And, yes, it is a narrative full of fun and buzzworthy visual references. What does it take to make a batch of biscuits? Well, it takes butter, and instead of taking a trip to the supermarket, Kacey in period costume churns the butter herself in the opening black-and-white moments of the video.
Later, we find ourselves watching a “Hee Haw” style country music variety show and even see a commercial for a Mind Your Own Biscuit Mix which references the song’s hook, “Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy.” It’s filled with such lines of homespun country folk wisdom as — “Taking down your neighbor won’t take you any higher /
I burned my own damn finger pokin’ someone else’s fire” — and such. And now, there’s the perfect homespun visual to match to remind us to “hoe our own row.”
The song serves as the lead single of Musgraves’ much-anticipated sophomore album, ‘Pageant Material” due out on Mercury Nashville. First drawing our attention many years ago as a finalist on ‘Nashville Star’ she went on to much success with her Grammy-winning major-label debut album, ‘Same Trailer Different Park.’
