Amber Heard graces the cover of ELLE and opens up for the first time about her marriage to Johnny Depp. The couple quietly married earlier this year, and the famously, fiercely independent actress reveals what life has been like since the nuptials.
The 29-year-old ‘The Magic Mike XXL’ star, 29 and the 52-year-old Johnny Depp got married in February, becoming among those A-list stars who manage to keep their wedding ceremonies away from the ever roaming cameras of paparazzi. In fact, they tied the knot more than once in private; at their West Hollywood home as well as in the Bahamas.
In her first public remarks, Amber Heard opened up to ELLE magazine about what life has been like since marrying Johnny Depp, “Nothing is a dramatic change. We’ve been together for a long time now, so it’s been a fairly organic process. I have a fiercely independent spirit.” She went on to express her happiness with her new husband as she said, “I fall in love again and again.”
The longtime couple first met on the set of ‘The Rum Diary’ and began dating in 2012. This after Depp’s split with longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. The openly bisexual Heard also had a longtime girlfriend in photographer Tasya van Ree.
She did express concerns, knowing that she is now more than ever in the public eye as the wife of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. She said, “The thing that really scares me is the potential of losing my freedom. I never want for my life to lose the ability to transverse the world, with freedom and ease. The freedom and ease I have worked so hard to acquire for myself.”
Amber Heard also had her say about women’s plight in Hollywood, and indeed it is that, a plight. At 29, she is still in her prime, and quite frankly, the age difference between herself and her new husband — 23 years — is quite often reflected on the big screen.
She decried the paucity of substantive roles, saying, ” “I get a stack of scripts, like, once a month, and most of the time, you find these placeholder girls that are there to provide a bounce for the male character.”
She went on to elaborate, spelling out the sad and unfortunate truth. She said, “So we know he’s funny because she’s serious and she’s mad at him. We know he’s strong because she needs saving. So really her job is to validate this personality trait of our hero or male.”
She added, I mean we’re trying to imitate life, and it seems to me a deeply saddening injustice that we are so uncreative and uninterested in developing representations of female life.”
Yes, indeed, the sad and unfortunate truth of Hollywood, and this from an actress, as noted, who is in her “prime,” such as it were.
