The 47-year-old daughter of the late Joan Rivers is making headlines for her unsparing remarks about Kathy Griffin which come in the midst of a nearly hour long discussion of her mother and the book she has penned in the aftermath of her death, “The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation.”

Melissa Rivers was on stage with interviewer Hoda Kotb of the ‘Today Show’ at the celebratory event at the 92nd Street Y on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The full video, as noted, as below, but the remarks that are drawing such attention begin at around the 16 minute mark.

Melissa Rivers opens up about ‘Fashion Police’ and what it had meant to her. She said, “We were a family, cast and crew and staff, and we went back too fast. And when the matriarch dies, the sisters started fighting, and someone tried to marry in… not a great match.”

For those who may just think of ‘Fashion Police’ as one of the polarizing TV shows driven by strong opinions, Melissa Rivers, as the surviving daughter of its co-creator offered a more personal perspective as she called it “this little jewel.” She went on to say, “It was the last piece I had of my mother and I working together.”

She continued, saying, “They took the last thing I had and smashed it. I felt like I was Humpty Dumpty, and I felt like I was on my knees gluing it back together or at least trying to find the pieces.”

She went on to speak of the fiasco which began when one of the co-hosts, Giuliana Rancic, made an unfortunate remark about the dreadlocks hairstyle Zendaya wore at the Oscars red carpet. She said, “And I felt like all these people were so out of control, including the one who made the allegations of racism.”

Kelly Osbourne was the first to make an exit and Kathy Griffin quickly followed, issuing a written statement via Twitter. And it was that very statement that became the focus of Melissa Rivers’ ire.

Griffin said at the time, “I thought that I could bring my brand of humor to Fashion Police so that beautiful people in beautiful dresses could be teased when appropriate.” The statement continued, “But I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference.” And Griffin came to the conclusion and added, “I discovered that my style does not fit with the creative direction of the show.”

Melissa Rivers began, saying of Kathy Griffin on the show, “I’m just going say it wasn’t a match on a lot of levels.” But as she continued, she let loose and added, “My biggest complaint was the feeling that she kind of s–t all over my mother’s legacy in her statement on leaving. And I know that that was not an intentional reading of it, but that’s how I felt. But I know that wasn’t how it was intended.”

She went on to add, “Everything was so heightened and everybody was so crazy, but that was my takeaway by [Griffin] calling the comedy and the style of it old-fashioned. I understand what you’re doing — you’re trying to save yourself — but don’t crap all over my mother to do it, and that’s how I felt. They took the last thing I had and smashed it.”

As of yet, Kathy Griffin has not responded nor have any of the others who were on ‘Fashion Police.’ But finally, and with unsparing words, Melissa Rivers has shared her thoughts and feelings on what was an unfortunate and abrupt end to a show which, truthfully, always had its controversy even when Joan Rivers was alive.
