The movie is based on the book of the same title, directed by Scott Cooper (‘Crazy Heart’), based on bestseller from coauthors Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill “Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob.” The subtitle beautifully encapsulates the appeal, and the anticipation for the movie.

As it will be released later this year, it’s all but destined for Oscar buzz. A major Hollywood star takes on a notorious and iconic gangster whose life story seems made for cinema. Several months before shooting first began on the movie set, the real-life Whitey Boger, an octogenarian who spent more than 15 years as a fugitive, was sentenced to two concurrent life terms plus five years, for a variety of charges including 11 murders and numerous counts of racketeering charges.

To say there was anticipation for even a glimpse of Johnny Depp as Whitey Boger is an understatement. And now that we see him, he’s unrecognizable. He has become the deadly bald-headed criminal of the history books, and the nasal South Boston accented voice is immensely creepy. We can safely expect much Oscar buzz for such a performance.

In the trailer we get quite a glimpse of the terrifying and calculating mind of a criminal mastermind for whom murder is a mere means to an end, and all in a day’s work. Johnny Depp’s Whitey Boger is merely questioning a man across a dinner table about a family recipe and yet it brings shivers as the tension in the scene builds.

And it’s quite a cast assembled for this unseemly story. Joel Edgerton portrays FBI agent John Connolly with whom Boger enters the “unholy alliance” and Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Whitey Bulger’s brother Bill. Additional costars include Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, and Sienna Miller.

The long anticipated movie opens in theaters on September 18th. And meanwhile, you can watch the first ‘Black Mass’ trailer below!
