The 47-year-old actor has been making the rounds for the upcoming ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ as the sure-to-be blockbuster is rolled out in premieres all over the world.

As one of such promotional interviews, the discussion began just as such interviews often do as Robert Downey Jr. talked about the Tony Stark-Iron Man character he has portrayed throughout the Marvel franchise dating back many years.

But then the unexpected happened when the interviewer, Krishnan Guru-Murthy changed the subject and asked him about a previous interview he had given to The New York Times several years ago, and questioned him over saying, at the time, “You can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal.”

After appearing visibly uncomfortable, Robert Downey Jr. replied, saying, “I could pick that apart for two hours and be no closer to the truth than giving you some half-arsed answer right now.” He added, “I couldn’t even tell you what a liberal is.”

The interviewer Guru-Murthy then asked him if it was all right to ask such questions, to which Downey Jr. said, “You have as much time as anyone else has.”

Guru-Murthy took that as a yes, and went on to ask him such questions. He began asking about his relationship with his father, namesake and fellow actor, and from there is proceeded to characterize Downey Jr.’s past as “the dark periods you went to taking drugs and drinking and all of that.” But the interviewer was not finished dredging up the past, he confronted the actor, saying, “I just wondered whether you’re free of all that or whether you think that’s still…”

Downey Jr. interrupted and said, “I’m sorry, I really don’t – what are we doing?”

The interviewer defensively responds, “Well, I’m just asking questions. That’s all.”

And with that, the ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron” star removed his microphone. He’s then heard saying, “It’s okay. It’s just getting a bit Diane Sawyer.”

Yes, clearly the line of questioning was far afield the movie’s Marvel universe territory, and with it, Channel 4 has made news, and uploaded the full video to YouTube. While not a scoop, it has drawn attention and discussion for new is overshadowing even the movie itself.
