Zayn Malik thanks One Direction in an emotional acceptance speech at the Asian Awards. See the video of his first public appearance since leaving 1D, he had kind words for his former band mates. He also drew attention that night for sporting a new haircut on the red carpet alongside his mother, Trisha Malik.
The 22-year-old pop music star rose to fame as a member of One Direction, the now immensely popular boy band that had its origins on The X Factor in 2010 where Simon Cowell assembled its members from among the competing solo artists who have now become teen idols.
Well, much as happened since then, and seemingly all of a sudden, Zayn Malik announced his departure from the group not long ago. His appearance at the Asian Awards in London, where he received the Outstanding Achievement in Music Award, was his first since leaving 1D.
He is the child of his British mother, Trisha Malik and his British-Pakistani father, Yaser Malik, and in his acceptance speech, he quipped, “I’d like to thank my mum and dad for making me Asian.”
Later, in the speech he paid tribute to his former band mates, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.
He said, in part, “I’d also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys that I ever met whilst being in the band and doing all the amazing things that I did. Some of the things that we did will stay with me for the rest of my life. Here’s to the future.”
And it that future that fans eagerly wait to hear more about. He has confirmed he will embark on a solo career and he has logged time in the studio with the likes of hitmaker producer and music artist Naughty Boy. But an album and a release date are yet to be announced.
