Kendall Jenner graces the cover of GQ and poses for a provocative, revealing photo spread. She dodges questions about her father Bruce Jenner’s transition, and opens up about her career as a model in the cover story interview which dubs her “Keezus.”
The 19-year-old not only has received massive attention for baring all for GQ, but also for that nickname, “Keezus,” which of course is a play on words, after her brother-in-law Kanye West’s album, “Yeezus.”
It goes to show how her life has been defined by the fame of those who surround her, not least her ultra-famous Kardashian step-family and the reality TV show that has brought their lives into international view for many years.
And yet in the midst, she has set out to have a bona fide career as a fashion model alongside the likes of Gigi Hadid, who has become her friend. When asked about her life on the runway, she told, GQ, “I didn’t do it because I felt like I had to prove something. This is a career that I’ve always wanted. And I mean, what else would I be doing? I probably would have gone to school to get the degree to go to work, when work was already there.”
She went on to explain that her modeling career is not for the reality TV show cameras. She said, “I told them from the beginning, I was like, ‘Okay, love you guys, but we’re not gonna do this. You’re not gonna follow me to shows, you’re not gonna be with me on this ride.’ ”
And yet, all the while, she is surrounded by fame and by polarizing figures, not least of which has been her own father, Bruce Jenner, set to give an interview to Diane Sawyer, and reportedly address his transition. Kendal Jenner, declined to speak on his behalf. As she responded to a tabloid headlines claiming her father had already told the family, she set the record straight, telling GQ, ““All that is bulls**t. I don’t even know what they’re talking about, so I have no idea. That’s why this life is different. That’s why this life isn’t normal. You know what I mean…That is not for me to answer.”
But the glare of publicity is nothing new, she goes on to explain, “My life was always different growing up. I mean, even before the show, my dad was who he is. He’s an Olympic athlete. And we were going to premieres, like Finding Nemo premieres, and we would be little kids, like, before the show, walking down the red carpet.”
She was asked about “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and she said of her onscreen self, “It’s completely me…”I don’t know how I’d have to play a character.” She also insisted that the program is not scripted. When asked, she said, “Well…no. Because it’s all our real life.”
She went on to clarify, and said, “It’s all real, so when there’s a story line, it’s all done after the fact that we’ve filmed, because that’s obviously how it makes sense, because that’s just how it actually happened.”
Later in the interview, she’s asked to weigh in on what it will be like when KUWTK is over, and concludes, “Everything that happens is still going to happen, just minus the cameras.”
By that time, it’s clear from her comments, she envisions a life of her own, in modeling, and whatever else may lie ahead.
