The Vanessa Hudgens-Zac Efron romance may be long over, but the actress is opening up about that very public five-year relationship that played out as the ‘High School Musica’ stars graced the big screen.
The 26-year-old actress has moved on and has been dating 23-year-old actor Austin Butler. But has much to say about that relationship from the previous decade.
She first met Zac Efron on the set of Disney’s ‘High School Musical’ in 2005. And, as we say, the rest is history. And now that the relationship itself is history, she tells The New York Times how conflicted she was feeling at the time as she was forced to share her beau with his many admiring — and sometimes aggressive — fans.
She said, “I went through a phase when I was really mean because I was so fed up.” She went on to say, “Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares. Then I realised that’s not what that’s about. ”Spread the love, be a good person, they support you, be nice.'”
She spoke glowingly of her new boyfriend, Austin Butler, and revealed that he has helped her find a renewed Christian faith, through his Pentecostal church, the Australian mega church Hillsong. Speaking of the worship style, she said, “It feels like Arcade Fire – it’s epic like that.” She went on to say, “They really focus on you having your own personal relationship with Jesus, which is wonderful.”
And as for the occasion of the interview, her portrayal of the title character of the musical “Gigi” in a Broadway revival about to start its run at the Neil Simon Theater, she said of it, “Doing this has really changed my perspective and my work ethic.”
She went on to say, “It just feels like there’s a massive shift happening. Once again finding myself on the stage, as I did when I was a little girl, makes me go: ‘Oh my God, this is what I want. This is what I want to keep doing.’”
It’s heartening to see a former Disney star find adult stability in life and career, and the article, full of such candid details of life has not surprisingly gone viral.
You can see the full interview here. A great read even if many are focusing mainly on the Vanessa Hudgens-Zac Efron relationship, a decade later.
