As has so often become the case these the song was released without fanfare or warning. These surprise releases work best when we are waiting and waiting and hoping and hoping for new notes and new melodies from a music icon. Sufjan Stevens easily fits that bill as one who consistently transcends musical genres — folk, electronica, he encompasses these and more with his unique style.

Aside from his side project, Sisyphus, we last heard from him in 2010, half a decade ago, with his critically acclaimed album, ‘The Age of Adz.’ Now news arrives that his new solo album, “Carrie & Lowell,” is set for a March 31st release on the Asthmatic Kitty label.

According to an official statement, the album takes its title from the names of Stevens’ mother and stepfather and its songs — which he himself wrote — encompass “life and death, love and loss, and the artist’s struggle to make sense of the beauty and ugliness of love.”

In the weeks leading up to that release we have to tide us over Sufjan Stevens’ new song, ‘No Shade In The Shadow Of The Cross’ and it’s well worth the wait for fans. The gentle ballad clocks in at just under three minutes and its a lush soundscape with acoustic guitar and Stevens’ voice backed up with some beautiful choral effects.

The “Carrie & Lowell” album tracklisting is as follows:

“Death with Dignity”
“Should Have Known Better”
“All of Me Wants All of You”
“Drawn to the Blood”
“Fourth of July”
“The Only Thing”
“Carrie & Lowell”
“John My Beloved”
“No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross”
“Blue Bucket of Gold”
