Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano are engaged after a proposal at Vatican City! The couple shared their wedding proposal and engagement ring photos with the world. And now the frst openly gay NFL draft pick will become a married man, adding yet another chapter to the unfolding story.
The couple had been rumored to be engaged, and now, in dramatic and joyful fashion they have confirmed. In recent years we have seen some remarkable photos confirming engagements and/or wedding proposals, but how many have we seen on top of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The stunning, historic venue is visible in the photos, along with the bright sunshine and the immense happiness of both men.
By now the world knows the story. But just for the handful who have not, Michael Sam became the first openly gay NFL Draft pick thanks to the St. Louis Rams. He and his boyfriend — Vito Cammisano, a fellow athlete and University of Missouri alum — gave sports an iconic moment as they kissed on television, celebrating as he received the news of his draft pick.
And now they are engaged! Cammisano proudly displays his engagement ring in one of the photos (below). Michael Sam Tweeted: ““@Vitcamm Thank you for saying yes.”
They continue to be trailblazers in sports. We have a long history of WAGs — wives and girlfriends. Now it’s time to make room for HABs — husbands and boyfriends or whatever more clever acronym we collectively decide upon. But now is not the time to worry about such linguistical logistics. Now is the time to report on some happy and historic news from the world of sports!
The couple already allowed the world to glimpse their passion as they shared the aforementioned kiss on live television. And there’s more to be seen of them as the eponymous ‘Michael Sam’ documentary premieres later this year on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. As they say, let the chips fall where they may. The world is changing so it’s time for folks to get caught up.
