Jennifer Aniston opened up about her divorce from Brad Pitt, her dramatic role as a pain-killer addict in ‘Cake’ and more in a rare television interview on CBS Sunday Morning. These were among many topics she addressed in the surprisingly in-depth discussion.
The 45-year-old actress who rose to fame in the 1990s with ‘Friends’ and a signature hairstyle has gone on to big screen success in the 2000s and 2010s, with one blockbuster after another from ‘Bruce Almighty’ to ‘Marley & Me to ‘Horrible Bosses’ among others. Having demonstrated an enduring appeal as a comedic actress she now takes on quite a different role in the drama ‘Cake.’
The independent film sees her portraying a woman with chronic pain who becomes addicted to prescription painkillers — sadly not an uncommon phenomena these days — who also battles suicidal tendencies. Yes, a far cry from the Jennifer Aniston of romantic comedies. Her performance has generated much Oscar buzz, most especially after she received both the SAG and the Golden Globe Best Actress nominations.
In the CBS Sunday Morning interview conducted by Lee Cowan, Jennifer Aniston said of what some see as a surprising career turn, ‘”Can I do it? Am I capable? Is there a reason I’m not always the go-to girl for these kinds of parts?”
She went on to say of taking on the role, ‘”I really was ready to, you know, just disappear and really go into the depths of a character.” Asked where it came from she said, “I’m pretty on the edge. I mean, I can cry at a Pampers commercial!” She went on to add, “You just act it, use your own emotions.” She also spoke of her earlier ambitions to be a dramatic actress.
This being the rare interview with Jennifer Aniston, she was not spared the need to speak about her personal life, as well as to comment on the incessant speculation and gossip it has spawned — indeed years of a proverbial cottage industry. She said of such attention, “There was a period where I was hell-bent on saying, ‘That’s not true, that’s not right, that’s not fair.’ And now I just think you have to let it roll off your back and you realize, I think everyone knows it’s all BS and, like, soap opera on paper.”
As for her divorce from Brad Pitt which years later remains a subject of interest to some, she said “I don’t understand it. I just think it’s like watching a soap opera!”
She went on to say, The fact that it still follows you around — I mean, I’m divorced. It’s gotta be painful. I mean, I don’t like it when people bring it up. But people still do, right?”
Continuing, Aniston said, “I don’t find it painful, though. I think it’s a narrative that follows you because it’s an interesting headline. It’s more of a media-driven topic.”
As Lee Cowan commented that she had “moved on, clearly,” she exclaimed, “Well, everybody has!”
Cowan then asked her if she were friends with Brad Pitt and if they talked. Aniston said, “We’ve exchanged good wishes and all that sort of stuff to each other, but not a constant thing.” She then turned the tables on her interviewer and said, “I mean, do you talk to your ex-wife?”
So that was that. The mere fact that she has said anything at all of course further generates headlines, and thus we must report on the headlines that are being generated even as Aniston herself would rather talk about this significant development in her movie career. Such is the life of the contemporary A list Hollywood star!
