The 42-year-old Today Show co-anchor recently returned from maternity leave — having recently given birth to her first child, a daughter, Vale. With her confession, she appeared to surprise her co-anchor Matt Lauer and the rest of the crew; Al Roker, Carson Daly and Josh Elliott.

The confession — alas, we live in a world where such a personal revelation is just that, a confession — was in the midst of one of the Today Show “trending topics.” They were talking about Botox use among men dubbed “Bro-Tox.”

Savannah Guthrie said of Botox, “I have done it, I did it in 2009. Really, I did it, I was working here.” She made the comment as a photo of herself interviewing President Barack Obama was shown on screen.

She went on to explain she had the procedure done in her forehead. She added, “That’s where everyone did it. And you know what? I remember looking back and thinking, “I don’t think that looks that good”.’

She continued, saying, “I have never done it again. I’m not saying I wouldn’t though; I would. And I’m mean, I’m definitely a candidate for Botox because of wrinkles. On your forehead, they’re supposed to smooth them out.’

As the discussion continued, none of her male Today Show crew members said they would use “Bro-tox,” with Josh Elliot rather pointedly calling it ” a low-grade chemical weapon.”

It was a brave admission, but if women in the public eye will continue to reveal whether they have had the procedure or not and how they felt about it, perhaps that will go some way towards destigmatizing it. These days it’s truly one of those damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don’t dilemmas, most especially for women. A smooth forehead will draw notice and speculation. But then too, so will wrinkles anywhere; frown lines, crow’s feet, what have you.
