Katie Holmes has opened up about her divorce from Tom Cruise, being a single mother to her daughter Suri and her life in the aftermath in a cover story interview with People magazine. The actress speaks of overcoming her fear and moving on with her life.
The 35-year-old actress is in the spotlight as she portrays a teacher in the comedy movie “Miss Meadows.” Not only that but she is gracing the small screen as well; she is reprising her role as of Jackie Kennedy Onassis in the upcoming sequel miniseries on Reelz Channel entitled ‘The Kennedys: After Camelot.’
And that’s still not all as Katie Holmes is also making her directorial debut with ‘All We Had,’ based on the Annie Weatherwax novel of the same title.
With a slate like that — and a transition from one side of the camera to the other to boot — you’d think that would be plenty for an interview of many tidbits. It’s no small feat, after all to portray one of the most famous historical figures of the past half century.
But naturally, it’s not the movie that sparks interest necessarily. The very private and guarded Katie Holmes tells People magazine about her life after divorce. And what a fitting venue as it was People magazine which reported exclusively the details of how she left Tom Cruise in a dramatic fashion. After all, she was not just leaving her husband, but she was also taking their daughter out of and away from the Church of Scientology.
Now two years later, she speaks reflectively, saying, “I have always been a huge risk-taker. I don’t have any fear now, I don’t have a lot of rules for myself, and I don’t take myself that seriously.”
And, also, she makes it clear how she sees herself and wants others to see her. Katie Holmes says, quite directly, “I don’t want that moment in my life to define me, to be who I am.”
She goes on, even more pointedly, “I don’t want that to be what I’m known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now.”
As time goes by, and as her post-marriage-to-Tom Cruise career accelerates, let’s hope she has her wish. It’s hard enough to be in the public eye, but for something from years ago, doubly cruel and difficult.
On to happier topics, she speaks about her daughter Suri whom she says “means everything to me.” Yet also admitting that motherhood is quite the challenge. Katie Holmes says, “I’m learning every day, and I have been since the minute I became a mom.”
That’s all People is gracing us with thus far — interview excerpts are sparse for now but you can see the cover picture here.
