Miami Dolphins player Derrick Shelby has been arrested and charged for allegedly trespassing and resisting arrest without violence at Fort Lauderdale nightclub. The mugshot photo of the NFL defensive end (below) reveals facial injuries.
The arrest of the 25-year-old Derrick Shelby (booking photo above) has made international news and the image of his face, swollen and bruised, has gone viral even as different accounts for the injuries circulate.
According to Miami Herald, quoting official police sources, Shelby is alleged to have caused a disturbance at a nightclub in Fort Lauderdale at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday morning. He was allegedly asked to leave and refused.
As a result, according to police, Shelby was arrested and was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest without violence; both are misdemeanor charges. Quoting his attorney, Danny Rosenberg, the newspaper goes on to note that Shelby bond and entered a preliminary not guilty plea.
The Palm Beach Post quotes Rosenberg as saying of his client, “There was no report of a fight (in the club) or anything like that. The only place the bruising can come from is from the police.”
Is is also quoted as saying, “I don’t want to get into that too much. When you see charges of resisting without violence and you see photos like that there’s a lot of conflicting information.”
As for his status with the NFL, the newspaper goes on to note that the Miami Dolphins team released a written statement which said in part, “We are aware of the reports regarding Derrick Shelby and are in the process of gathering more information.”
The arrest of Derrick Shelby and the publicity that surrounds it puts him in the midst of what has been quite a string of NFL arrests, all of which which have been widely covered in international news and social media. From Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice’s alleged assault of his wife Janey Rice, seen in elevator surveillance video from an Atlantic City casino to the arrest of Minnesota Vikings’ player Adrian Peterson for alleged abuse of his four-year-old son. Jonathan Dwyer of the Arizona Cardinals was also recently arrested.
