The case has drawn international attention for the horrific nature of the crime, with such interest perhaps intensified upon the release of Sonya Spoon’s mugshot photo (above) which reveals a creepy and unsettling smile.

According to CBS Baltimore, Prince George’s County police responded to a 911 call to the residence in Cheverly, Maryland at around two in the morning on Sunday. When paramedics arrived, the two children — one-year-old Ayden Spoon and three-year-old Kayla Thompson — were found in the residence and at that point still alive and described as barely breathing. They were both rushed to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The report goes on to note that police say Spoon admitted to suffocating the toddlers with plastic bags.

The motive is unknown, but it is being reported by WTOP that according to court records, Spoon was in the midst of a custody battle with Lester Thompson, the father of one of the children, Kayla Thompson.

The Washington Post reports that the house where the crime took place belongs to Gary Spoon and Paivi Spoon, Sonya Spoon’s parents with whom she had been living. She is also reported as being a resident of Chesapeake Bay, MD.

Sonya Spoon was arrested and has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. She was booked into jail where she is being held without bail.

As for details of Sonya Spoon’s bio and background, little is known other than what has been culled from social media and public records. Her Twitter account indicates that she was adopted at age three from Russia and brought to the U.S. where she grew up. She also says in the profile that she is studying early child education and that her little girl is “her world.” The last Tweet was in December 2012.
