An image of Zelda Williams as a toddler in the arms of her father was the very last image that Robin Williams posted on his own Instagram account in tribute to her 25th birthday. The shocking death by suicide has left the world stunned and mourning. All the more so for the immediate family.

Following her step-mother, Susan Schneider, the third wife of her father, who issued an eloquent and emotional public statement Zelda Williams also went public. She took to social media and expressed her great sorrow and loss, and began her Tweets with a quote from Antoine De Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince, saying: “You – you alone will have the stars as no one else has them…In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night…You – only you – will have stars that laugh.”

Zelda Williams concluded, “I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up.”

While she received an outpouring of support, not everyone was among that chorus of supporters. A Photoshopped image of Robin Williams was Tweeted. Unfortunately, as is the case with the Internet, those images are out there forever. More unfortunate is that Zelda Williams as well as the immediate family bore the brunt of this.

According to reports, the image was traced to two Twitter accounts which were suspended. But prior to that Williams had Tweeted an appeal for help from followers, and later, Tweeted: ‘I’m sorry. I should’ve risen above. Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye.’

But nonetheless the damage had been done. Zelda Williams made her decision to leave, and in so doing posted this message:

“I will be leaving this account for a but while I heal and decide if I’ll be deleting it or not. In this difficult time, please try to be respectful of the accounts of myself, my family and my friends. Mining our accounts for photos of dad, or judging me on the number of them is cruel and unnecessary. There are a couple throughout, but the real private moments I shared with him were precious, quiet, and believe it or not, not full of photos or ‘selfies.’ I shared him with a world where everyone was taking their photo with him, but I was lucky enough to spend time with him without cameras too. That was more than enough, and I’m grateful for what little time I had.”

She went on to say, “My favorite photos of family are framed in my house, not posted on social media, and they ‘ll remain there. They would’ve wound up on the news or blogs then, and they certainly would now. That’s not what I want for our memories together. Thank you for your respect and understanding in this difficult time. Goodbye. Xo”

Zelda Williams and her famous father appeared in the 2004 movie together, and also were involved in the promotional video games campaigns. A video game enthusiast, Williams had named his daughter Zelda Rae after the character in the Legends of Zelda video game. See them together in a happy moment in a video posted years ago on YouTube that went viral.
