Joseph Gordon-Levitt has finalized his deal with Warner Bros and director Christopher Nolan to star in the Batman sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. The actor was rumored to have joined the film several months ago after the announcement of Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy’s casting.
Because of his eerie resemblance to the late Heath Ledger, Gordon-Levitt was speculated to be a replacement for his character The Joker. But Nolan put an end to that rumor when he flat out said that The Joker nor The Riddler would appear in the next film.
Gordon-Levitt has become the third actor in The Dark Knight Rises, who previously appeared in Nolan’s 2010 blockbuster Inception. The director is known for working with the same actors for multiple projects. Christian Bale appears in the Batman franchise and also starred in The Prestige, while Michael Caine was also in The Prestige and Inception.
The studio declined to comment on what role Gordon-Levitt will play but some continue to speculate The Riddler, Deadshot from The League of Shadows, and Alberto Falcone. On another note, 20 year old U.K. actress Juno Temple is being eyed for a supporting role in the sequel, which the trades describe as a “street-smart Gotham girl.”
The Dark Knight Rises will begin shooting this summer, and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 20, 2012. Nolan is currently adding the final touches to the screenplay, while also serving as a creative consultant on Warner Bros’ Superman reboot, Man of Steel. He’s definitely a busy bee right now.
We’re not sure who Gordon-Levitt will play but we hope to see him once again interact with Tom Hardy on the big screen. They had a great dynamic as Inception’s Arthur and Eames. Nolan should definitely use their chemistry to his advantage. Are you excited about Gordon-Levitt joining The Dark Knight Rises? Who do you think he’ll play?
