The story of 24-year-old Amanda Longacre crowned a winner in her state competition and then, after the fact, deemed too old has made headlines around the world. With her appearance on live television on the Today Show — which now has become a viral video — many more have learned of her plight, and it is just that, a plight and not of her own making. While we have seen beauty queens kicked out of pageants for unseemly reasons including past arrests, nude photo scandals, sex taps and the like this case is nothing less than heartbreaking as the now former Miss Delaware had done no wrong.

Amanda Longacre turns 25 in October and the rules stipulate that the state titleholder must be between 17 and 24 throughout the entire year to compete in the Miss America pageant in September. Now she has lost the title to the runner-up Brittany Lewis and not just that; she has also lost $11,000 in scholarship money.

She did not attempt to deceive the organizers as to her age. Quite the contrary. She said during the live interview that she had given the pageant organizers her birth certificate. It was only after she won the title that the problem with her age was discovered.

She said on Today Show, “I lost everything and they want to erase me forever.” She went on to say, “It really hurts because when your peers vote you for Miss Congeniality, you work so hard to get to this position. I haven’t been doing pageants for very long, this is all brand new to me.” She broke down in tears during the interview.

As for the Amanda Longacre biography and background details, aside from her age, which has become central to the story, she is a Penn State graduate and is originally from Bear, Delaware. She has spoken publicly of her interest in becoming a social worker.

One would hope for a reversal of the decision, but such hopes may be misplaced. But despite the unfortunate outcome, during her short-lived reign as Miss Delaware she has received international attention. Sometimes, in the long run that can be beneficial for one’s career.
