The arrest of the 30-year-old Jeremy Ray Meeks in California and his now famously handsome mugshot (photo above) has become an Internet and social media phenomenon. As is typical these days, booking photos are posted online and in this case, the Stockton Police Department put Meeks’ mug shot on their Facebook page.

The rest, as we say, is Internet meme history.

Now some of his earlier booking photos have surfaced, thanks to The Smoking Gun; you can see them below. As the convicted felon becomes a viral star, this is quite the commentary on our society and culture.

While we have seen celebrities and public figures with glamorous mugshots — Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams comes to mind as a recent example — we have also witnessed a private citizen become an instant celebrity. Such is the case.

There’s no denying that the original mugshot not only does not look like a typical mugshot. Jeremy Meeks gazes at the camera revealing dreamy blue eyes and a chiseled face that makes one wonder why he had never been discovered by a talent agent in Los Angeles. It could have been the photo for the cover of a magazine. This has not been lost on those tens of thousands who have “liked” the photo when first posted on Facebook, and even less so now that he has achieved an uncanny celebrity status.

For those who want to know about his criminal past in detail, The Smoking Gun has all the documents here. You can even see his fingerprints.

As for his personal life, the details of Jeremy Meeks’ bio are also surfacing. It was quickly established — to the disappointment of more than a few — that he is a married man with a young child. In fact, it is through his wife that he learned of his sudden fame.

He gave an interview to ABC News 10 in which he said “‘I appreciate [the attention] but I just want them to know that this is really not me. I’m not some kingpin.’

While fame may be growing, he is in the midst of legal proceedings, according to a statement posted on that same Stockton Police Department Facebook page that launched his fame, the criminal complaint alleges he is “a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, along with other firearm and gang related charges.” When he was arraigned in court, his bail was set at $1 million.

Police further allege in a statement that he a member of a gang, the Northside Gangster Crips, while relatives including his mother allege that he has left that lifestyle behind. Either way, his fame is cemented and growing; as of this writing the original Facebook post (here) with his booking photo has more than 86,000 “likes” and more than 26,000 comments.
